However, sometimes we are stuck in behaviors or routines which don't bring us joy or even make us unhappy.

Maybe we snack at night and feel guilty in the morning when our pants are too tight, or we skip our morning workout then feel stiff and grumpy later in the day.

It can be hard to find routines we want to stick to and then develop them into a habit. My goal with Coreculum is to help you build fitness into your life so you can easily stick to a clear workout plan.

Start Living Today

"We should all start to live before we get too old" - Marilyn Monroe. It's going to happen, right? We're going to wake up and wonder where the time went. As I move into mid-life, it's been on my mind lately. There's so much we want to do. How can we squeeze it all in?

Two simple thoughts on this. One simple solution.

First, make the most out of your life by staying fit and healthy. Without our bodies, we're relegated to being casual observers and can't take part in many of the activities we love.

Second, increase your life span so you have more time do to what you want, this of course relies on staying fit and healthy too.

Why am I physically exhausted at the end of the workday?

How can it be we feel physically exhausted at the end of a work day when we barely lifted anything heavier than our mobile device?

Today's work environments require us to use our minds more than ever and put our bodies on the sidelines to watch. Our bodies literally get tired watching this happen. They stiffen up and hold themselves fixed in tight postures crammed into cubicle workspaces they didn't evolve to occupy.

Of course we have some physical motion during the day, walking to meetings or checking our mailbox, but we deserve more than this. It should be just as simple to get a quick effective dose of movement to free your body as it is to check an email.

My goal with Coreculum is to produce products which are approachable, compact and efficient so you can easily move to action and keep yourself physically engaged during the day in an office or at home.

Why Launch on Kickstarter?

A number of you have asked about Kickstarter. So, we thought we'd share some Kickstarter basics and why we're launching the Core Ball on the site tomorrow.  

What is Kickstarter?

Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. Everything from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology. Kickstarter is full of innovative and imaginative projects that are brought to life through the direct support of people like you and me. 

Since Kickstarter's launch in 2009, over $1.5 billion has been pledged by more than 8 million people, funding more than 80,000 creative projects. That's impressive. 

How does Kickstarter work?

Thousands of projects are funding on Kickstarter at any given moment. Each project is independently created and crafted by the person behind it. For the Core Ball, that's the team here at Coreculum and me. 

The product designers, filmmakers, and artists you see on Kickstarter have complete control and responsibility over their projects. They spend weeks building their project pages, shooting their videos, and brainstorming what rewards to offer backers. When they feel ready, a creator can launch their project on the site and share it with their community.

Every project creator sets their project's funding goal and deadline. If people like the project, they can pledge money to make it happen. If the project succeeds in reaching its funding goal, the backers are charged when time expires. If the project falls short, no one is charged. Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing.

Why is Coreculum on Kickstarter? 

I'm trying to solve a problem that we all face - How do we get an effective, simple and efficient workout with affordable equipment? The Core Ball is our solution to this problem and we want to work with you to make the product come to life. Your commitment on Kickstarter validates the Core Ball as a product and puts the product into real people's hands. Now we have to work together to get this project funded.

My Dream For Coreculum

I've always wanted to help people live better, healthier, stronger lives. This was the main reason I became a physician and practice as a radiologist. In my medical work, I take complex information which is locked away inside of people's bodies and help them see what is going on so they can become healthier.

My dream is that Coreculum can do something similar for people. There are so many simple, affordable pieces of exercise equipment available with so much potential. This potential, however, is locked away inside the device. 

The infographics we create and place on our equipment help people see this potential and know how to use the equipment. Why does exercise equipment have to be so confusing?

I am personally frustrated by the volume of workout equipment that I don't know how to use. I want to workout, but I don't want to have to investigate machinery or work with a trainer to figure out how to do it. This motivated me to create workout equipment that you know how to use the first time you pick it up. This is why Coreculum exists. 

The Core Ball Complete is our first product. We took one of the most fundamental workout devices (a medicine ball), redesigned it, and put a workout guide on it.

Here's how the Core Ball works:

  1. Grab a 12-inch Core Ball at 8, 10, or 12 lbs. 
  2. Decide which body part you want to work or choose to work the entire body.
  3. Select from 16 exercises on the ball labeled by body part: arms, legs, back and core.  
  4. Do the workouts. Check the ball for good form and the appropriate reps and sets.

That's it!

A full body workout will take 30 to 40 minutes. This can be shortened if only a specific body part, such as the legs, are exercised. Also, the workouts don't need to be done all at once. You can break them into chunks. Do 8 exercises in the morning to get moving for the day and 8 in the afternoon to stay energized as you head into the evening.

I have a Core Ball Complete in my office and at my house. I usually start every morning with 8 or 9 exercises. This helps energize me for the day and get loosened up. Usually after a light lunch, I'll do the remaining 8 exercises. This is my daily routine. On the weekend, I do all 16 exercises at once in the morning. This is a more intense workout. Having a ball in my office and at home lets me stay in shape everyday of the week. 

My mission is to create affordable, easy-to-use and well-designed equipment that an athlete or beginner can pick up for the first time and get a great workout. That's what we do.

What Exercise Equipment Is Ideal For The Home Gym?

What should I use to workout with at home? What equipment gives me the most options to reach my fitness goals? Questions we all ask ourselves, friends and trainers. 

Home gyms should be affordable, compact, and approachable.  Affordable because expensive equipment will probably never be purchased by most of us. Compact because we don't want to dedicate half of our house to unsightly equipment. Approachable meaning we aren't intimidated by the equipment and we know how to use it.  

There are a number of simple, easy to use, compact and affordable classic devices which can provide great workouts. For instance, the medicine ball. Its been around for centuries. Gladiators used them to train for battle. 

The problem is most of us aren't gladiators. We don't know how to use these devices at even a portion of their potential. The knowledge is locked inside the device, but Coreculum unlocks this knowledge by placing infographics on the surface of its products to clearly show how to exercise with them.

No Personal Trainers or Classes Needed

When you go to a gym, you see lots of fitness equipment scattered about, such as medicine balls, yoga mats, and kettlebells to name a few. Take for example a medicine ball. You can literally perform hundreds of different exercises with it. However, if you don't have the knowledge of how to do these exercises, a trainer to show you, or instant access to pictures of the exercises, the equipment has limited value. 

I'm working to solve this problem so you always know how to get a great workout. 

I started Coreculum with the mission to make fitness equipment smarter, easier to use and more effective. To do this, we create exercise equipment with infographics on the surface of the products to show you how to perform a variety of exercises to get a great workout. These exercises are performed independently to focus on a specific muscle group or body part, or they are performed together for a full body workout. 

The first piece of equipment that we've created is the Core Ball Complete. Shown above. It provides an entire full body workout with one piece of equipment. You work through each exercise pictured in an infographic on the ball and perform the recommended number of reps. Below are two infographics each showing a movement, proper form, reps and sets. 

Never again, do we have to search out a trainer for help or juggle a mobile device while working out. Simply look at the device for clear instruction. This results in an efficient workout regime you can start from the moment you pick up a Coreculum device.

Dr. Rickards, what is Coreculum?

Coreculum is a fitness equipment startup with a mission to help people achieve fitness with simple exercise equipment that guides you through your workouts. 

I've always had a bunch of crazy ideas for products and services. Along with this, knowing how to workout effectively and efficiently has always been a challenge for me. There are so many options out there, which are great, but can be hard to learn or master unless you spend a lot of money with a trainer or time attending classes.

When I had the idea for Coreculum, it just made sense and was something I totally needed to give me a great workout that was also easy to understand, efficient to do and affordable. I thought this was something a lot of busy people who cared about their bodies could also benefit from. Plus, as a physician, the idea aligned well with my knowledge of the human body and what's needed to optimize it in a workout. So, I decided this would be one of those crazy ideas I would pursue and I decided to go for it.

Why does Coreculum matter?

Coreculum matters because it's a fitness product anyone can benefit from and easily understand how to use. It is something that you can easily access in your house, doesn't take up much room, and can pick up right out of the box to get an incredible workout.

How will Coreculum benefit people?

The Core Ball Complete is our first product and focuses on the core muscles. The core muscles are the foundation for our movements as humans. They help us in everything from standing and walking to high-level competitive sports. You can think of them as literally the foundation of your muscular and skeletal system.

Just as a building with a weak foundation will sag and crack over time, so will your body unless your foundation of core muscles stays strong. With this in mind, I developed the Core Ball with 16 workouts on it to work all the major muscle groups with a focus on strengthening and toning the core.

I’ve spent the last 4 years developing the Core Ball Complete. I developed a brand, prototype and built a team of amazing individuals who share a passion for helping others achieve fitness to live better, happier lives. Coreculum wants to help you take care of yourself. We want to give you a tool that you can pick up and start using right away to improve your fitness level without needing to take a class, use a trainer, or spend a lot of money on a membership or device.

What are the top 5 benefits of working your core?

Core exercises are a crucial part of any exercise regimen. Top benefits of working your core are:

Flatten and Strengthen Your Abs

Doing these will not only strengthen your abs, but also flatten them to make your body look better. Core training is the fastest way to flatten your abs among other types of abdominal workouts. 

Stabilize the Lower Back

Core exercises also make the lower back stronger and healthier. With a stronger back, you will be less prone to lower back pain that is usually a result of carrying too much weight, or pressure on the lower back. Moreover, a stronger core will allow for normal spinal functions.

Improve Balance and Coordination

As the back and abdominal area becomes stronger, the body also experiences an improvement in balance and coordination. Doing core exercises stimulates a particular area in the brain called the cerebellum that links to body parts for coordination, spatial awareness, and balance. These exercises are not simply a workout for the body, but also for the brain.

While most people find it hard to believe that working out abdominal muscles can improve flexibility, core exercises can certainly do wonders for ligaments and muscles by stabilizing the lower back. When the back is stabilized, stress and tension are removed, thus allowing for greater range of motion, which in turn results in enhanced flexibility.

Another benefit of core exercises is improved lung capacity. Core muscles are connected to the diaphragm so working out these muscle groups will enhance one's ability to inhale and exhale fully. If the body is able to take in more oxygen, the heart is able to pump more blood, so there will be a significant improvement in the overall performance of the body.
